On January 16, 1920, prohibition went into effect and closed every bar in the nation. Suddenly, millions of drinkers were suddenly turned into crinimals and forced to go underground to satisfy their thris, an opportunity for Al 'Scarface' Capone.
The Violent Years
By the end of the 1920's, the depression had hit America hard, but for organized crime, it was a boom. Even as the law caught up with Al Capone, the mob became more violent as they carved up their territories. Meyer Lansky, Charles 'Lucky' Luciano and Benjamin 'Bugsy' Siegel forged an organized criminal empire. Bonne and Clyde, John Dillinger and George 'Machine Gun' Kelly plied their deadly trade in murder and mayhem.
Crime, Inc.
By the 1940's, America's criminal underworld, guided by Luciano and Lansky, controlled most of the nation, but Bugsy Siegel, the Mafia's Hollywood connection, saw opportunity in the sands of Nevada. He helped to create modern las Vegas before he was 'pushed' out of the picture by younger, even more ruthless criminals spreading their tentacles of crime across the nation.
