Red Skelton was known and respected as a comedian who could bring his audience to laughter and tears - without uttering a single word of profanity. He was also known and loved as eight other icons of comedy who were regulars on his Radio and Television Shows.
These were: CLEM KADIDDLEHOPPER, JUNIOR - THE MEAN WIDDLE KID, SHERIFF DEADEYE, WILLIE LUMP LUMP, GEORGE APPLEBY, SAN FERNANDO RED, CAULIFLOWER McPUGG AND FREDDIE THE FREELOADER
Red's multi-faceted talents included being a motion picture star, a composer of music and song, writer of short stories, poet, and painter of clowns and other subjects. In all of these, he was both teacher and pupil.
Red Skelton thought of himself as, "One of America's Clowns." His family oriented Radio and Television Shows reflected Red's own kindness and gentle humor. The words he used to close his shows and stage appearances best describes his philosophy:
"I personally believe we were put here to build and not to destroy. So if by chance some day you're not feeling well and you should remember some silly little thing I've said or done and it brings back a smile to your face or a chuckle to your heart - then my purpose as your clown has been fulfilled. Goodnight and may God bless."
RED SKELTON'S most requested routines were "DUNKING DONUTS and "GUZZLER'S GIN."
Lothian Skelton (Wife of
Red Skelton)
This set is authorized by The Red Skelton Estate. His career spanned more than seven decades and is still recognized today as one of America's greatest comedians.
Red Skelton was born in Vincennes, Indiana on July 18, 1913, the fourth son of Joseph and Ida Skelton. His father Joseph was a former Circus Clown. Joseph, however did not live to see the birth of his youngest son, destined to become a comedic legend. He died two months before Red was born.
Richard's early childhood was one of near poverty. As a young boy, he sold newspapers on a Vincennes street corner to help his mother provide for him and his three older brothers. His red hair soon earned him the nickname of "Red."
It was Red's chance meeting with Ed Wynn that sparked Red Skelton's desire to become an entertainer. Ed Wynn was appearing at the local theatre and before his show, bought a paper from young Red. He asked Red, "What could a man do for entertainment in this town?" and Red replied, "A comedian by the name of Ed Wynn is appearing at the Theatre across the street. Why don't you go see him?" Wynn asked if Red was going to the show? "I can't afford to," Red honestly admitted. Ed Wynn then bought all of the boy's papers so he could afford to go see the show. Upon arriving that evening, Red found his customer, Ed Wynn outside in front of the theatre. Wynn told Red who he was and took him inside and let him look out at the gathering audience from a position behind the curtain. Red, seeing all these people, decided that he wanted to become an entertainer. At the age of ten, he left home to join a traveling medicine show. When asked late in life why he left home at such an early age he commented, "I left home because I was hungry." He later credited Ed Wynn with inspiring him to become a comedian.
Richard "Red" Skelton went to emcee Dance marathons,
and perform aboard a Mississippi River Boat.
He was a Clown in the Hagenbeck & Wallace Circus,
the same Circus in which his father had been a Clown.
His comedy took him into Vaudeville and Burlesque.
In 1930, at age 16, Red was the youngest comic in Burlesque. His act included falling off the stage into the orchestra pit and coming up with a drum wrapped around his neck. While appearing in a Kansas City Burlesque Theatre, he met and tried hard to impress a pretty fifteen year old head-balcony usherette by the name of Edna Stilwell. She was not impressed with Red however and even tried to get him fired. The manager told Edna, "I won't have to fire him. He'll probably break his neck falling into the orchestra pit."
Red's persistence with Edna paid off however and on June 1, 1931, Red and Edna were married. Edna's opinion of Red's comedy had changed greatly and she became not only his wife, but his business manager. Ten years later, Red acknowledged her management ability by saying, "If it wasn't for her, I'd be a bum."
Red took his comedy to Canada. It was there, in Toronto, in 1937 Red Skelton first became widely known and recognized as a classic comedian. His famous "DUNKING DONUTS" routine was introduced the same year.
1937 was a banner year for Red Skelton as he became more and more popular as a wonderful comedian. Red returned to the United States. His fame in Canada had preceded him and he was thought by some to be Canadian. Red worked on a tireless schedule to clown at Walkathon's and emcee countless stage shows.
His first appearance on Radio came as a guest comedian on Rudy Vallee's popular "Fleischmann's Hour" which aired on Thursday night, August 12, 1937.
In 1940, Red's classic "GUZZLER'S GIN" act was added to his growing list of comedy sketches.
Shortly after his appearance on Rudy Vallee's "Fleischmann's Hours," Red was featured on NBC's "Avalon Time" with Red Foley and Red's first wife, Edna Stilwell. In 1941, Raleigh Cigarettes offered Red Skelton his own show and "THE RED SKELTON SHOW" premiered on NBC Radio. Ozzie Nelson was Red's orchestra leader and Harriet Hilliard (Later Nelson) was the lead singer and Junior's mother. Soon listeners became avid fans of Red Skelton's first comedy characters.
