Yanni Chrysomallis has been "in the swim" of things for most of his 44 years. Born in Kalamata, Greece in 1954, he has become one of the New Age genre's shining lights for his expressive piano/synthesizer and contemporary effects as composer and arranger. Yanni - "first name only please," came to the U.S. in 1972 to enroll at the University of Minnesota in psychology. He achieved his bachelor's degree but decided the world of psychology was not for him and left school before completing his graduate degree studies. Music took over, bringing him to a place he'd thought of while teaching himself piano and arranging. As a youngster in high school, Yanni was on the Greek National Swim Team and at age 14 broke the Greek national freestyle swimming record. He arrived in America after high school. Tossing aside the psychology plan, he soon found himself doing studio work and by the early '80s was in a group called Chameleon. In 1986, he signed with Private Music as a solo artist, releasing his debut album, OPTIMYSTIQUE. He won the World Music Award in 1993, has won a number of gold and platinum records (500,000 and 1 million sales) and was nominated for a Grammy in 1994 for best New Age album IN MY TIME. Aside from the New Age label, however, Yanni's music has been heard by millions by people who could care less about that style: He's written music for commercials, sporting events and soundtracks as well as for TV. He's created music for events like The Wide World of Sports, Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, U.S. Open Tennis, World Series and Olympic Games. With nearly a dozen albums in release and the occasional world tour, Yanni is at the top of his game, even though he has had to suffer the occasional criticism aimed at his music. His biggest fan is apparently his lover Linda Evans, the TV star. He was able to take some advantage of their relationship by appearing on talk shows and other TV programs (Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous) not normally seeking out synthesizer players. However, his records do major business and his shows are sellouts.
