Wayne Newton was something of a boy wonder when he and his brother Jerry won a five-year contract to play Las Vegas. Wayne, born in Virginia in 1942, was barely sixteen. He eventually became arguably the highest-paid entertainer in the Las Vegas' nightclub circuit and is still considered a star there. Starting to sing professionally at age six, Newton's family moved to Phoenix, Arizona to further his career, Wayne learning to play several instruments. He and Jerry became a working duo and when the Las Vegas offer came, the family moved there. They had one single for Capitol in 1959, "The Real Thing/I Spy," and then recorded for a minor label, George Records. Although Jackie Gleason heard the brothers in 1962 and hired them to perform on his television show, the next year Jerry dropped out when it became clear that Wayne was the budding star. Wayne was back with Capitol and also with the Bobby Darin management company, which oversaw his recordings now. He had now become a Vegas lounge singer whose material ranged all over the pop map, barely touching on rock. By 1963, he had recorded what would become his signature tune, "Danke Schoen," which was followed by an album of the same name and became a hit. Newton danced back and forth between record companies until his biggest hit single was released on the Chelsea label, the No. 4 hit (1972) "Daddy Don't You Walk Too Fast." He has had four Top 40 singles 1963-80 plus some high-scoring albums. By the '70s, he was strictly Las Vegas, where he continues to perform.
