Born Vito Farinola in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, Vic Damone was on his way to stardom at nineteen. His smooth baritone voice had an emotional strength that carried the tunes he chose to sing to chart success and by 21, he had two million sellers. Damone joined many other singers in the ‘40s who got their first break appearing on the popular Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts program. He had been taking singing lessons while working at the Paramount Theater in New York as an usher and elevator operator but soon after the Godfrey appearance, he was booked into the Martinique Club, which was known as a venue for young singers learning show business. By nineteen, he was with Mercury Records, where he began making inroads on the charts with "I Have But One Heart" and "Say Something Sweet To Your Sweetheart," the latter with rising singer, Patti Page. His two big 1949 hits were "Again" and "You’re Breaking My Heart," pretty much cementing his rising reputation as a hit-making romantic singer. By this time in the late ‘40s, he had a CBS radio show, Saturday Night Serenade. Damone’s movie career began in 1951 (he was 21) when he was featured in "Rich, Young and Pretty," a musical that began a series of co-starring roles with singer Jane Powell. These included the Sigmund Romberg film biography "Deep In My Heart," "Athena," (1954) and "Hit the Deck" (1955). Among his ‘50s films were "The Strip," a musical mystery with Mickey Rooney and jazz players, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Jack Teagarden, Louis Armstrong and Barney Bigard, and a role in the musical "Kismet" with Howard Keel, Anne Blyth and Dolores Gray. Continuing his romantic balladry, Damone had a number of vinyl hits through the ‘50s, including "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena," "Cincinnati Dancing Pig," "My Truly, Truly Fair," "Here In My Heart," "April in Portugal," "Eternally," "Ebb Tide," "On the Street Where You Live," (from the hit musical "My Fair Lady" and his third million seller) and the theme from "An Affair To Remember." He made the album charts with THAT TOWERING FEELING and became a triple threat with his own television series in 1956-57. But by the dawn of the ‘60s, America’s musical tastes were changing and romantic balladry dimmed while rock moved forward. He continued his album success into the ‘60s and in 1965 managed a Top 30 single with "You Were Only Fooling (While I Was Falling In Love)." He had a comeback of sorts in the ‘80s in the United Kingdom when a BBC disc jockey began playing songs from his massive back catalog. As a result of this new popularity, many of his earlier hits were reissued, including an album, VIC DAMONE SINGS THE GREAT SONGS. He was a star in the United Kingdom through the ‘80s with new albums and regular concert tours. In 1987, he married Diahann Carroll, his third wife.
