Plenty of musical styles came and went during the ‘60s heyday of the San Francisco rock scene but one of the most musically interesting and professional was the Latin-influenced music of Santana created by leader, Carlos Santana. While other bands of that San Francisco era, like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and many others were offering different rock attitudes, Santana was offering rhythmic music that could almost lull its audience, yet doing it with an understated fire accentuated by Santana’s guitar and his ideas of percussion. Carlos Santana was born in 1947 in Mexico and by age 20, he was in San Francisco was pushing his style. A number of talented musicians made positive waves in the band, but it was Carlos’ continued perseverance in hewing to his style that kept his music alive and well into the ‘90s. By the late ‘60s, the band was well-known but on the verge of superstar popularity. Its appearance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival made it an international star. The band’s first few albums, including SANTANA, ABRAXAS and SANTANA III, were major hits with the latter two at No. 1 on the album charts for some time. And on all of the many hits made by the band, Carlos’ guitar work exudes a sensual fire impossible to dismiss. And it is obvious to the listener that here was a guitarist playing Latin-influenced rock yet heading into jazz territory. Between 1970-82, the band had ten Top 40 hits, including two 1970 singles, No. 9 "Evil Ways" and No. 4 "Black Magic Woman." As Santana evolved into new music, Carlos was working towards a jazz-fusion style. He eventually teamed up with jazzers Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter on an album, THE SWING OF DELIGHT. He became a disciple of Sri Chimroy and connected with fellow guitarist John McLaughlin for an album and also recorded on different projects with Buddy Miles, Flora Purim and Stanley Clarke and later with Willie Nelson and Booker T. Jones. In 1985, he toured with Bob Dylan and in 1993 the band toured South America. Carlos also began a record company, Guts and Grace Records, which releases compilations of live performances from earlier artists, including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye. While music from the ‘60s may be more in the nostalgia camp as a new century beckons, Carlos Santana continues to be on the cutting edge.
