It is perhaps something of a stretch to go from opera to rock, but there is a kernel of that truth in the career of rock singer, Pat Benatar. Born in Brooklyn in 1953, Pat Andrzejewski trained for an operatic career but never actually appeared in that role, although listening to her stunning voice clearly shows how that sort of training is beneficial. She became Pat Benatar after high school when she married Dennis Benatar and moved to Virginia. Her marriage was short-lived but she kept the name and returned to New York in the 70s. Singing at the Catch A Rising Star Club in New York, she was heard by her soon-to-be manager, Rick Newman, who was able to get her signed to Chrysalis Records. Her debut album, IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, appeared and became a hit, putting three singles in the Top 30. She had a major success with "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," which rolled up to No. 9 and had immense sales while then reaching the Billboard Top 10, an even better chart reaction. Her second album was CRIMES OF PASSION, in 1980, which made No. 2 on the album charts and helped her win a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. PRECIOUS TIME came out in 1981 and soared to No. 1. Its "Fire and Ice" nailed another Grammy for the singer. She married Neil Geraldo, her guitar player and producer and the person responsible for most of her material, in 1982. Her next album, GET NERVOUS, was No. 4 on the album charts and the next year she released a live album that included a studio cut, "Love Is A Battlefield." Then came TROPICO and later, SEVEN THE HARD WAY. She scored her last hit single, "Invincible," from the film "Legend of Billie Jean," as the 80s closed. Her popularity went into decline, partly because of her new role as a mother, but a compilation album, BEST SHOTS, came out in 1987, becoming a major hit in Europe and seeing her star rise in the UK as the album made the Top 10 there. Still occasionally active, Benatar is said to have an interest in an acting career.
