Otis Redding was born September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Georgia, the son of a Baptist minister. He was into gospel music early but after his family moved to Macon, he soon found jump blues and R&B, his interest keying on the popular star Little Richard at the time. He joined Little Richard's band, the Upsetters and competed in local talent shows for the $5 prize. He won the top prize 15 straight times before being barred from competing again. After singing in a club in 1959, he joined Johnny Jenkins and the Pinetoppers in 1960 and also could be heard singing at teenage party radio shows in Macon theaters. His work with the Pinetoppers would help advance his career. The band moved to Memphis for a recording session in 1962 at the Stax studio but with studio time still available, the producer allowed Otis to cut two songs. That resulted in his first hit release "These Arms of Mine," which in early 1963 made the Hot 100 national chart. Redding's achingly tender vocals would go on to make hits "Pain In My Heart," "That's How Strong My Love Is," and his first charted Top 40 hit "I've Been Loving You Too Long," which put him on the chart in 1965 at No. 21. His all time big hit "Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay" was recorded just three days before his death and entered the charts in February 1968, roaring to No. 1 and staying there for four weeks. Otis Redding was riding at the top of his career when he died and was slated to appear in major concert venues in New York and Washington, D.C. besides being booked to appear on the Ed Sullivan and Smothers Brothers shows and host a television special in 1968. He was already gaining awards for some of his recordings. Since his death, several record collections featuring the soul singer have hit the market. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
