The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band came to life in 1965 in southern California playing a collection of folk, pop and country music. California was already the home of the San Francisco Sound (Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead) and surf music (Beach Boys, Jan & Dean) and the band fell into its own catchy style, first as the guitar-voice duo New Coast Two with Jeff Hanna and Bruce Kunkel and then adding musicians to make the Illegitimate Jug Band, all of this leading up to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The band was six strong and even larger, at one time having Jackson Browne onboard as writer/guitarist/singer, although he left after a few months. (The band continued to use his sons, though.) John McEuen filled out the band as it was to be known for most of its lifetime. The NGDB was into jug music, vaudeville songs, pop, folk and later country and was even in the movie "Paint Your Wagon" before calling it quits in 1969. Giving up the humorous stuff, the group re-formed in 1970 and began a career in very good country-rock, helping move the conservative elements of country into newer music. The album UNCLE CHARLIE AND HIS DOG TEDDY in 1971 unleashed the band's biggest hit, "Mr. Bojangle," which charted at No. 9. It also included Mike Nesmith's "Some of Shelly's Blues" and Kenny Loggins' "House At Pooh Corner" besides "Bojangles," written by Jerry Jeff Walker. Later, WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN put the band in the studio collaborating with country stars Merle Travis, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs. By 1976, the band became the Dirt Band and in 1977 toured the USSR and was becoming an international favorite. Players came and went and came back again with McEuen retiring and former Eagle Bernie Leadon joining for a brief time. At the end of the '80s, the Dirt Band recorded WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN VOL. 2 with stellar help from Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Chet Atkins, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn. The band still toured into the '90s.
