The McGuire Sisters grew up in Middletown, Ohio, singing as youngsters in the church choir. By the middle of the '50s, Christine (b. 1929), Dorothy (b. 1930) and Phyllis (b. 1931) were one of the hottest acts in show business. In 1955, the Sisters broke into the charts with "Sincerely," a tune that swept to No. 1 and stayed there for ten weeks, close to being an all-time record for chart-toppers. Of course, in the '50s records stayed on the charts longer, but ten weeks was still good enough for a tie for second place with four other acts over the years also achieving that number. Only Elvis Presley's 11-week run with "Don't Be Cruel," "Hounddog" was better. The McGuires sang on local radio then got what would be their first break, entertaining at Army camps and hospitals in 1950-51. Clubs and radio in Cincinnati followed but then a fortuitous move to New York in 1952 turned into an appearance on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts show that utilized their close harmonies on a regular basis. They also sang on the Kate Smith radio show. With a new contract with Coral Records in 1954, the Sisters made their debut recording, "Pine Tree, Pine Over Me," and followed it with several other singles, covering some R&B hits and setting the stage for "Sincerely," which had earlier been charted by the Moonglows. Next came TV appearances, nightclub dates in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and London. Meanwhile, they were continuing recording. Between 1955 and 1961, the McGuire Sisters had 14 hit singles, including "Sugartime," which spent four weeks at No. 1 in 1958. As the '60s dawned, it was obvious that black music was finally a part of the American pop music scene, not just for black stations and clubs. The McGuire ballad sound was sliding away in favor of groups like the Shirelles, Crystals and Supremes. The Sisters eventually disbanded with Phyllis moving into a solo career but they reformed in 1985 and were singing into the '90s, dealing with nostalgia on one hand with oldies while incorporating newer music from plays like "Cats."
