Little River Band was the first Australian-based band to hit the big time in rock, rolling out thirteen hit singles between 1976-83, six of them Top 10 hits. Whether this helped draw attention to other Australian acts is arguable, but in the wake of Little River Band came Men At Work, Air Supply, AC-DC and INXS for starters. The band evolved out of a group called Mississippi, which had worked mostly in the London area. Original members were Graham Goble (b. 1947 Australia), Beeb Birtles (b. Gerard Birtlekamp 1948 Amsterdam, Holland) and Derek Pellicci. They merged with English singer Glenn Shorrock (b. 1944) in Melbourne in 1975 and took the new band name, adding Rick Formosa and Roger McLachlan. All members had the sort of experience needed to carve out success and the Australian audience took to the band right out of the chute. They wasted no time in going for the American audience, garnering their first hit in late 1976 with No. 28 on the top 40, "It's a Long Way There." Formosa and McLachlan were replaced on the band's second album, DIAMANTINA COCKTAIL, by Australians David Briggs and George McArdle. It went gold in the United States, a first for an Australian band, and followed with another big-selling album, SLEEPER CATCHER. In two years, 1977-79, the band piled up six hits, including No. 3 "Reminiscing," No. 6 "Lonesome Loser" and a pair of No. 10s, "Lady" and "Cool Change." Little River Band continued its popularity in the United States and gained fans in Latin America and Europe while fading a bit in its home base of Australia. In 1983, new singer, John Farnham, well-known in Australia, replaced Shorrock but he left in 1986. Touring diminished in the mid-'80s but album sales remained good and in 1988 Shorrock returned. The band signed with MCA and released album GET LUCKY in 1990.
