The Limeliters were one of the earliest of the late '50s pop folk groups who came into focus on the strength of a guitar and a cup of coffee. Alex Hassilev (b.1932) played guitar, banjo and sang, Lou Gottlieb (b. 1923) played bass and Glenn Yarbrough (b. 1930) sang and played guitar. Gottlieb had studied under noted composer Arnold Schoenberg and became a musicologist before meeting the other two. The folk music revival swept college-age youth and soon coffeehouses and offbeat nightclubs favoring the music sprang up seemingly everywhere, giving young people a more idealistic lyrical approach than the rock 'n' roll and smarmy ballads of the time. Yarbrough, Hassilev and Gottliieb formed the Limeliters in 1959 in Los Angeles, taking the name of the group from the Limelite Club run by Yarbrough and Hassilev in Aspen, Colorado. The trio's most successful early engagement was at San Francisco's "Hungry I." The original trio lasted only four years and did not make a dent in the Top 40 single charts, even though its 1961 song, "A Dollar Down," was a minor success. The dent they did make was in album sales and they made those work with live recordings, such as TONIGHT: IN PERSON, which got to No. 5 in the album charts, and the followup, THE LIMELITERS, which made the Top 40 album list. But THE SLIGHTLY FABULOUS LIMELITERS, also in 1961, made it into the Top 10. More albums in 1962 were made, including the high-selling SING OUT!, but by the following year the group saw a waning audience. Yarbrough opted for a solo career - he's still at it in 1998 - and in 1965 he made the singles chart at No. 12 with "Baby the Rain Must Fall." Hassillev and Gattlieb stayed with it, adding Ernie Sheldon to replace Yarbrough.
