Jethro Tull is not the name of the high-stepping, long-haired, jester-dressed flutist who leads the band. His name is Ian Anderson (b. 1947) and the band is called Jethro Tull, named after an 18th century English author and agriculturist. Jethro Tull, organized in 1967 by Anderson, Glenn Cornick, Mick Abrahams and Clive Bunker, by the '90s had enlisted a large number of rock musicians who came and went. In 1991, with album CATFISH RISING going back to the band's blues roots, the band was Anderson, Martin Barre, and Dave Pegg plus other studio cats. Jethro Tull was organized in 1967 and its first record was "Sunshine Day," which flopped and went away. The band didn't go away, however, mainly because the name on the record was Jethro Toe. "Song For Jeffrey" followed and it helped establish the band, since it was released with the group's true name. The band is called progressive, "art-rock," bluesy, rock operatic, or hard rock, depending on your affinity for what Anderson feels the band is up to. It has released some two dozen albums in its history, among them the acclaimed rock opera AQUALUND and THICK AS A BRICK. Anderson has also put out product that met with bad press, including PASSION PLAY, which got mostly bad reviews, even as it was a chart-successful album in the U.S. Anderson's reaction was his retirement from performing, which he, of course, reneged on when it became obvious there would be no hue and cry for his return. WAR CHILD came in 1974 and it has proved to be one of Jethro Tull's most promising works. Anderson was born in Edinburgh and after learning to play flute is said to have been influenced by the music of jazz reedman Rahsaan Roland Kirk, although jazz is definitely not a part of the Tull sound. Success in singles releases has not been Tull's forte - albums certainly are. But the band did have chart hits in 1972 with "Living In The Past" (No. 11) and 1974 with "Bungle In The Jungle" (No. 12). And it won a Grammy in 1988 for album CREST OF A KNAVE in hard rock awards. Jethro Tull's live shows in major arenas showed a propensity for visuals, which over the years have become as much a part of rock's show biz attitude as the music. Anderson's shabby stage outfits and his mad hopping around only added to the show. Nowadays, Anderson is a landowner with a salmon processing plant in Scotland, which he runs when not performing.
