Glenn Yarbrough was best known in the early '60s as a lead singer with the successful pop-folk group the Limeliters, which he co-founded in 1959. The group, with Alex Hassilev and Lou Gottlieb, attained much success with ten albums on the charts until 1964, when Yarbrough left for a solo career, which he remains committed to in the '90s. Yarbrough was born in 1930 and began singing in church as a child in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He became enamored with folk music in the '50s and was discovered in Chicago while performing around the country as a folksinger in coffeehouses and small venues. He soon opened his own coffeehouse in Colorado along with Hassilev, named The Limelite, soon to be the name of the trio when Gottlieb came aboard. Yarbrough left the Limeliters in 1964 and the next year made a major breakthrough on the Top 40 charts with "Baby the Rain Must Fall," the tune reaching No. 12. By the end of the'60s, he had amassed ten solo albums, all making the album charts. One of his most noted albums was GLENN YARBROUGH SINGS THE ROD MCKUEN SONGBOOK, with all music written by poet McKuen, who became something of a cult figure in his own right in the era. Continuing studio recording in the '70s and '80s, Yarbrough had no more hit singles. He reformed the Limeliters in the '80s with new members. He continues to perform in small venues around the country.
