Glen Campbell
Country Music | 3 CD Set Reg. $24.99 ON SALE! $19.99
Before Glen Campbell became a well-known and in-demand session/studio player, he had been in his uncle Dick Bills' band in his home state of Arkansas. Part of a musical family, Campbell was born in 1936 and by age 18 was playing guitar with Uncle Dick before forming his own band, Glen Campbell and the Western Wranglers, later in the '50s. He moved to Hollywood in the late '50s to establish his reputation. His first single was "Too Late To Worry - Too Blue To Cry," which made the Top 100 but failed to put him on the map of either pop or country music. Later, he was to replace Brian Wilson for a brief time in the Beach Boys but returned to session work. Capitol Records decided to try his star power and in 1967 Campbell recorded "Gentle On My Mind," which entered the charts and eventually won a Grammy for best country song. It was actually his fourth chart hit after his initial hits "By the Time I Get To Phoenix," "I Wanna Live" and "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife." But within days of "Gentle" leaving the charts, he nailed a No. 3 with "Wichita Lineman" and followed that with No. 4 "Galveston," establishing a knack for finding material based on cities not necessarily in the New York - LA - Chicago status. Campbell began acting and won a role with John Wayne in "True Grit" and then did some duet recordings with Bobbie Gentry and then Anne Murray while becoming involved in television. He eventually found true stardom on the charts in 1975 with his first (of two) No. 1 hits, "Rhinestone Cowboy" and then "Southern Nights." He has continued to record and appear in concert, while reaping much success in the country market. He had 19 Billboard pop chart hits through 1978 and with his various roles in music as session player, excellent guitarist, capable singer and actor, he has shown an ageless versatility.
