The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been setting the rock and R&B scene on fire for a quarter-century, presenting some of the most driving and energetic live shows in popular music. Pretty much the brainchild of Kim Wilson, the T-Birds formed in 1974 when Wilson and Jimmie Vaughan (the older brother of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan) joined forces after they met in Austin, Texas. They embarked on a career that made the band the quintessential Texas roadhouse band, one that played electric blues, tight R&B and later rock. Wilson, born in 1951, began playing harmonica at age seventeen in his California hometown. He soon moved to Minneapolis and then to the hot and burgeoning music mecca in Austin. His harmonica influences included Little Walter, Harmonica Smith, Lazy Lester and James Cotton. His increasing talent for singing had him listening to Bobby "Blue" Bland, B. B. King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rodgers and Muddy Waters, the latter a major influence. The T-Birds released their debut self-titled album in 1979, a blues-impacted album that soon gave the band cult status. The band's music, while still tightly influenced by the blues, moved slowly into rock & roll and Cajun music while also taking the occasional trip into soul. It soon became known as a white band that could actually be mistaken for black. By 1986, it was a big act, playing in blues and rock venues and at home in festivals. The lineup changed occasionally and co-founder Jimmie Vaughan left in 1989, leaving Wilson the sole original member of the now 15-year-old band. In 1986, the band made its only appearance in the Top 40, gaining a No. 10 hit with its big hit, "Tuff Enough."
