Eddie Rabbitt's place in the country music pantheon of influential artists is secure, certainly a tribute to someone who began life a few soundbites from Nashville. Born Edward Thomas Rabbitt on November 27, 1941, this songwriter/singer/guitarist was the son of Thomas Rabbitt, an Irish refrigeration engineer who loved to play fiddle and accordion in his first Brooklyn and then New Jersey homes. Eddie was raised on the East Coast with his Gaelic heritage intact but country became part of his life as a youngster. (Eddie returned to that heritage briefly in 1978 when he recorded "Song of Ireland" accompanied by his father). With country music his focus, Eddie moved to Nashville in 1968, realizing that New York was not the most conducive place to mold a career in that idiom. It was 1974 that Rabbitt saw his first recording success with "You Get To Me," followed in 1976 by his Elektra Records No. 1 country hit "Drinkin' My Baby (Off My Mind)." It was co-written by his partner, Even Stevens, with whom he wrote often, along with producer David Malloy. He had signed with Elektra in 1975, one of the first artists in the company's new country division. Establishing himself in the progressive country camp, Rabbitt was off and running. Between 1976 and 1989, he had a string of Top 10 country and pop hits that included 16 chart-toppers. His "I Love A Rainy Night" in 1980 was No. 1 in the country, pop and adult contemporary charts. Eddie was nominated for three Grammy awards in country music and was named best pop male singer in 1981 by the American Music Awards. He also had his song, "Every Which Way But Loose," become part of that Clint Eastwood movie's soundtrack. It became his first pop Top 40 hit, coming in at No. 30 in 1979. He scored 26 No. 1 country hits and eight Top 40 pop hits in the career that ended too young at age 56 in 1998. Rabbitt died from lung cancer. His album "Beatin' The Odds" came out after his cancer surgery and his finale was the posthumous "From The Heart."
