Dr. Hook Became a popular '70's era band playing highly accessible music that early on had a humorous bent that eventually put the band on the charts. But it was cartoonist/humorist named Shel Silverstein who made it work early. Formed in 1969 to play New Jersey bars, lead singers Ray Sawyer (the one with the eyepatch), b. 1937, and Dennis Locorriere, b. 1949, combined a countrified look and feel for music with R&B and a folkie attitude and with William Francis, Jay Davis and George Cummings, the band began as Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show. The big break came when a talent scout heard the band and signed it to perform the Silverstein score to the movie, "Who's Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying These Terrible Things About Me." Silverstein was a Playboy cartoonist mostly, but enjoyed the music world, too. The band's debut album included its first pop hit, "Sylvia's Mother," which raced to No. 5 on the chart in 1972. Months later it had probably its most recognizable hit, the Silverstein tune, "On the Cover of the Rolling Stone," reacing no. 6 on the charts. The song's motivation was an intense desire to gain fame by being on the magazine's cover. Dr. Hook did eventually get on the cover of Rolling Stone. The band dropped the Medicine Show appellation after "Rolling Stone," and subsequently achieved eight more Top 40 hits, including "Only Sixteen," "Sharing the Night Together," "When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman," and "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk." By this time, Dr. Hook was a seven-pieve band with a touring schedule that kept it on the road relentlessly, offering a somewhat humorous act while writing its own songs. A number of albums were released along the way but while being popular, the band was not in the best of financial straights, this perhaps helping the release of an album called BANKRUPT. Their fortunes got better as Locorriere took most of the vocals and Sawyer tried a solo career. It continued through the '80s but is rarely heard from as we have entered a new century.
