Dan Fogelberg spent a few years trying to make a dent in the music business, but it took an association with the Eagles in the mid-'70s to bring it about. Born in 1951 in Illinois, Fogelberg moved to California after leaving the University of Illinois in 1971 and became involved in the folk music scene, even managing to get on a tour with Van Morrison. He moved to Nashville where he met producer Norbert Putnam, who helped get him into Columbia Records, which released his debut album HOME FREE. The album included known players Jackson Browne, Roger McGuinn, Joe Walsh and Buffy Sainte-Marie, but it went nowhere, causing Columbia to drop him. He returned to session work but came to the attention of Irv Azoff, Walsh's manager, who got him a deal with Epic. Putnam was still connected with Fogelberg and involved in subsequent Fogelberg works. Dan moved to Colorado in 1974, releasing his more successful album SOUVENIRS. Fogelberg liked to play all the instruments on his projects but this inevitably took more time to produce them. He appeared in concert with the Eagles as a supporting act in 1975 and this was a major step in his career. However, he was a no-show in a 1977 appearance with the band in England. It was reported later that he stayed home to work on his album NETHERLANDS. Fogelberg's HIGH COUNTRY SNOWS had a bluegrass tinge and then the harder-edged EXILES followed. He has had a number of hit singles on the pop charts, including the No. 2 "Longer" from 1980. He continues to have a cult following that appreciates his sensitive writing, playing and versatility.
