Irish born Tom and Paddy Clancy were living in New York when they helped initiate the '50s folk revival. Although from a musical family in Ireland, they came to America to become actors, but soon Paddy was assisting Folkways and Elektra labels in recording Irish songs. He founded his own label in 1956, Tradition, which began releasing material by Josh White and Odetta. When younger brother Liam came to the United States, he traveled the Appalachians seeking folk music. Tom and Paddy were born in 1923 and Liam in 1936, Tom dying in 1990. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem formed in the late '50s after Makem was urged to move from his native Ireland to New York. They performed at the growing folk revival functions in clubs and eventually began to record Irish music in 1959. The Clancys created a large following with their outgoing, boisterous renditions of songs and gained national prominence after an appearance on the Ed Sullivan television variety show. Through the '60s, the group recorded frequently for Columbia and by the late '60s, the Clancys' sister, Peg Clancy Power, had moved to the United States and was making solo recordings of her own. Makem departed in 1969 but the Clancys continued their popularity with occasional appearances, including their annual St. Patrick's Day shows in New York. Albums were made in the '70s for Vanguard and Warner Brothers and in 1984 the original group re-formed for a concert and album. The remaining Clancys still perform occasionally in the '90s.
