Randy Bachman (b. 1943) was part of the fine Canadian band, The Guess Who, which had taken Canada by storm during the 60s. He left in 1970, not long after the band finally received notice in the United States with monster hit "American Woman". He formed Bachman Turner Overdrive in 1972 in British Columbia with brothers, Robbie and Tim, and bassist, Fred Turner (b. 1943). In fact, he also was to join keyboardist Keith Emerson in a group that later became Emerson, Lake and Palmer, but he had to cancel because of illness. He formed Brave Belt in 1971, but after marginally successful albums, personnel changed and the new lineup was called Bachman Turner Overdrive, the "Overdrive" coming from a trade magazine for truckers. Mercury Records signed the band in 1973 but the initial release, BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE had little success in the United States and Canada and Tim Bachman left. Taking advantage of a constant touring schedule in the United States, the band released an impressive sophomore effort, BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE II, the LP reaching No. 4 on the charts and spawning a No. 12 single hit, "Takin Care of Business". The group's third album, NOT FRAGILE, was even better, hitting the top of the United States album charts and offering the No. 1 hit "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", which made it to No. 2 in the U.K. Although continuing to put out albums through the 70s, the band's last Top 10 effort was FOUR WHEEL DRIVE in 1975. Randy Bachman left the band in 1977 and formed Ironhorse and also did some solo records. He was replaced by Jim Clench, who appeared on the album FREEWAYS. The next year, the band changed its name to BTO but never returned to past glory. In 1984, Randy and Tim Bachman and Fred Turner regrouped and released another self-titled album, for Compleat Records, but it had little impact on the charts. The group still toured in the 90s but failed to release any additional recorded material.
