Bobby Vinton began his singing career on Epic Records with a four-week run at No. 1 with "Roses Are Red (My Love)" and eventually scored 30 Top 40 singles during his heyday, which was essentially 1962-75. A year later, he hit No. 3 with "Blue On Blue" and then followed with a pair of chart-toppers in "Blue Velvet" and "There, I've Said It Again." His final No. 1 was 1964's "Mr. Lonely." As a '60s style crooner, Vinton was one of the aces at the style that wowed the ladies. He had the looks and he had a pleasing-enough voice, which, in those days, little else mattered. Of Polish heritage, he was called the "Polish Prince." He was born in Pennsylvania as Stanley Robert Vinton on April 16th. Two reliable sources each give different years, however, Joel Whitburn's Billboard Top 40 Hits saying 1941 and the 1996 version of Microsoft's CD-rom program, MusicCentral, saying 1935. Vinton played trumpet in his high school band and then stepped to the front to sing, a tape being made that eventually made its way to Epic Records, which inked him in 1960. (This seems to make his 1941 birth date more believable, since he would have been out of high school several years if born in 1935.) He played supper clubs and other venues into the late '60s, using an occasional formula of re-arranging hits by other teen idols. He made Jimmy Crawford's "I Love How You Love Me" into a top 10 hit and Bobby Vee's "Take Good Care of My Baby" into No. 33, both in 1968. Although his last No. 1 was 1964's "Mr. Lonely," he did get a No. 3 in 1974 with a song he co-wrote, "My Melody of Love." Vinton's "Blue Moon" was on the soundtrack of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON in 1981 and then his "Blue Velvet" was put to use in the 1989 movie of the same name, giving him a major boost in Great Britain. His success there was short-lived, however, when a reissue of his "Roses Are Red (My Love)" failed to make a dent.
