Blondie became one of the most popular acts of the '70s by combining pop, rock and some visual spunk into a style of music opposed to the 70s growing hard rock scene. With the blonde-haired beauty, Deborah Harry, at the microphone, the band became one of the most acclaimed in New York. Along with other bands of the era such as Talking Heads and Television, New Wave was born. Blondie came together in 1974 when Harry, Chris Stein and Fred Smith left the Stilettos to forge a new direction. The early lineup, called Angel and the Snake, included a pair of backup singers. Harry had been with a folk-rock band called Wind In the Willows. After some shuffling of personnel, Blondie was born. The band's lineup was now Harry, Stein, Jimmy Destri, Gary Valentine and Clem Burke, but Valentine left in favor of Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison. The first album on the Private Stock label was BLONDIE, which had moderate success while trying to capitalize on Harry's blonde good looks. The band switched labels to Chrysalis and re-released the first LP, following it with PLASTIC LETTERS in 1978. Success came with single hits "Denis" and "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear", both reaching the Top 10 in the UK. Also in 1978 came the show-stopping PARALLEL LINES album, which saw two singles become major hits, the No. 1 quasi-disco "Heart of Glass" and "Sunday Girl", which made it to No. 2 in the UK. More chart-topping success came with the 1979 EAT TO THE BEAT, which included the No. 1 single "Call Me". The 1980 album AUTOAMERICAN saw two chart-busters in "The Tide Is High" and "Rapture". Two more albums came before the band broke up, THE BEST OF BLONDIE (1981) and THE HUNTER, in 1982. Internal strife slowly led to the band's demise as Harry became the focal point of Blondie. She had even released a solo album, KOO KOO. But when Stein became ill with a serious genetic disease called pemphigus, both he and Harry stopped performing. In 1985, she resumed her solo career and also became involved through the years with an acting career. A 1999 documentary on television showed her to be, at 54, still a vivacious personality and performer.
