Two songs are so closely associated with Andy Williams that his versions are the definitive ones, even though they were hits by others at first: "Moon River" and "Days of Wine and Roses." In fact, both were instrumental chart hits for the Henry Mancini Orchestra and "Moon River" was not a charted hit for Williams. "Days of Wine and Roses" only reached No. 26 for Andy in 1963. But his album sales skyrocketed and two albums, MOON RIVER AND OTHER GREAT MOVIE THEMES and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, plus several others, sold millions. Williams was born Howard Andrew Williams in either 1928 or 1930 (two sources quibble on the year) and sang in the church choir with his three brothers in their hometown of Wall Lake, Iowa. The quartet soon was on the radio in Chicago, Cincinnati and Des Moines, and in 1944 backed Bing Crosby on his Oscar-winning song "Swinging On a Star," heard in the movie "Going My Way." Andy's voice dubbed for Lauren Bacall's singing voice in her initial film with Humphrey Bogart, "To Have and Have Not." He went solo in 1952 and was featured for two years on the popular Steve Allen Tonight Show, signing a record deal with Cadence and releasing his first single, "Canadian Sunset," which went to No. 7 in 1956, the first of three dozen hits that roamed all over the charts, mostly in the Top 20. He achieved his sole No. 1 hit "Butterfly in 1957 and had a No. 3 in 1958 with "Are You Sincere." Another hit associated with Williams is "Can't Get Used To Losing You," which spent four weeks in 1963 stuck at No. 2. Williams was often seen on TV through the years but it was his long-running network variety show (1962-71) that kept him in the public eye and sold albums. He won an Emmy for Best Variety Show for the program. And he was also a big hit in Great Britain, many of his songs getting equal or better chart ratings there. He is still one of America's most loved singers but does not appear as frequently as during his heyday.
