Alabama was an early band in the process of changing the face of country music. With long hair, beards, electric bass, and an evolving country-pop sound, the quartet was at the forefront of the coming changes in country music. Three cousins started the group as Wild Country in Fort Payne, Alabama in 1969: Jeff Cook (b. 1949), Randy Owen (b. 1949) and Teddy Gentry (b. 1952). A drummer was hired and released and the band kept trying to make their music work by playing bars in the area, finally having success with a long gig at a club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1973. The name change to Alabama came in 1977 and by 1979 the group had its first hit: "I Want To Be With You." About this time, Mark Herndon came on as permanent drummer (b. 1955). A series of hits came, both on pop and country charts, including "Feels So Right," "My Home's In Alabama," "Love In The First Degree" and "Tennessee River." During the '80s, Alabama had several platinum sales albums, including 40 HOUR WEEK, a big hit for the band. They did some work with singer Lionel Richie in 1986 but returned to country, where they remain a solid touring act. Perhaps the group's biggest hit was "Play Me Some Mountain Music," with great harmonies and a down-home country feel. Alabama is still a viable and strong country act that draws capacity crowds to its arena shows.
